Today, explore the region by driving to Epidaurus — one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece. Epidaurus is best known for its ancient healing sanctuary (Asclepieion) and the Sanctuary of Asclepius, located about eight kilometers from the town, featuring its magnificent theatre, still in use today for performances. The cult of Asclepius at Epidaurus dates back to the 6th century BC, when the older hilltop sanctuary of Apollo Maleatas became too small. It became the most famous healing center of the classical world, where the sick sought cures for their ailments. Pilgrims would spend the night in the enkoimeteria, a great sleeping hall, awaiting divine guidance through dreams from the god himself. Within the sanctuary, a guesthouse (katagogion) with 160 rooms hosted visitors, and nearby mineral springs were believed to have healing properties. Asclepius, the revered god of medicine, brought great prosperity to the sanctuary, which thrived until it was sacked by Sulla in the 1st century BC. It was later revived by Emperor Hadrian in AD 124 and continued to flourish for centuries.
